Mexican military takes over Lazaro Cardenas port

Mexican military takes over Lazaro Cardenas port
The Mexican navy, army, federal police and the Attorney General’s Office are now in control of the city and of the Pacific port of Lazaro Cardenas where they have relieved all local law enforcement officials of their duties on Monday. The navy took over the administration and port captaincy of their duties.

Lazaro Cardenas is one of Mexico's most important ports and has the second largest cargo volume.

The navy will replace gradually 156 customs and tax inspectors. The reason behind the military takeover is the province of Michoacan where  Lazaro Cardenas is located, has recently seen an increase in drug trafficking and violence between local gangs.

APMTerminals, Hutchison Port Holdings and SSA Marine have terminals in Lazaro Cardenas and in the process of expanding their facilities.

"Our operations and construction programme  continue in Lazaro Cardenas as normal,” APMT-Lazaro Cardenas managing director J D  Nielsen told Seatrade Global. “ We have been informed by the government of the changes carried out in the port in order to further increase its security.

“We welcome this preventive security measure and we will continue to coordinate our local operations with the new officials that will be covering different port authority duties," he added.

Lazaro Cardenas has also a direct link with the US border through the railroad operated by Kansas City Southern de Mexico, used mostly for Mexican exports to the US market.
