Mississippi River re-opens following oil spill

Mississippi River re-opens following oil spill
The Mississippi river has re-opened following an oil spill at the weekend as a result of a collision.

“A successful flight with unified command, state and federal on-scene coordinators, conducted a comprehensive assessment of the affected portion of the river and determined the river was safe to transit with restrictions,” the United States Coast Guard (USCG) said.”

Mariners must comply with a broadcast notice to mariners being issued for river transits by the Coast Guard.”

A collision on 22 February between a tank barge E2MS 303 and tug Lindsay Ann Erickson resulted in a spill of 31,500 gallons of light crude.

The oil spill resulted in the closure of the Port of New Orleans and a 65-mile stretch of the Mississippi River.
