New cranes complete Hutchison’s Lazaro Cardenas expansion
Lazaro Cardenas Container Terminal (LCT), operated by Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH), has completed its second phase expansion at a total cost of $225m following the arrival of two new STS super post-panamax cranes and five additional gantry (RTG) cranes.

The Pacific terminal LCT, located in the Mexican state of Michoacan, is considered the largest and best equipped container port system in the country.

The terminal moved 1,051,183 teu in 2013 and accounts for 21% of Mexico’s containerised cargo.

“The new cranes complete the terminal expansion second phase and will strengthen our operations, continuing to serve with efficiency and world class productivity our customers,” Hutchison Latin America commercial director Aitor Ibarreche told Seatrade Global.

Each super post-panamax crane is designed for the operation of loading and unloading for seventh generation vessels, having a range of up to 23 rows of containers with an arm of 62.5-metre capacity of 60 tonnes.  

LCT is the only terminal in the country with electric yard cranes adding to its efficiency and sustainability in its operations with significant savings in fuel consumption and emissions of pollutants into the environment.  

LCT has 30 STS super post-panamax cranes and 11 dock cranes, three berths and a total length quay of 930 metres.
