Panama joins the Tokyo MOU

Panama joins the Tokyo MOU
Panama was accepted as Cooperating Member of the Memorandum of Tokyo (Tokyo MOU) during the 26th session of the Monitoring Committee of the Rector of Port Memorandum, held in the city of Putrajaya, Malaysia.

After approval of the membership of Panama, the Administrator of the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP), Jorge Barakat said the integration of Panama amongst the Tokyo MOU member countries is proof of the Panama Maritime Authority’s commitment to support the Tokyo MOU in strengthening the system of inspections of vessels on the Asia Pacific port standardised regulations and cooperating with member countries to reduce substandard ships.

The “acceptance of Panama is a tribute to the efficiency and technical quality of the Panama Register’s efforts to increase safety standards in international shipping,” said Barakat.

By accessing the regional organisation, Panama will have the opportunity to obtain detailed information on inspections, deficiencies and detentions of ships in the Asia Pacific ports and develop direct contacts with port authorities of members of the Tokyo MOU, which will directly benefit the vessels registered under the flag of Panama.
