'Serious disagreements' remain in Panama Canal talks
“Serious disagreements” remain between the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) and canal expansion contractors Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC) as expected date of an accord passes.

Last week the ACP said that progress was being made in negotiations and an accord was expected to be signed on 18 February, however, this failed to materialise.

“Although last week the parties seem to have come to an agreement on certain components during the talks, there were serious disagreements at the time of putting it in writing,” ACP said in a statement on Tuesday.

Talks between ACP and the ceos of the companies of the GUPC consortium - Sacyr Vallehermoso, Impregilo, Jan de Nul Group, and Constructora Urbana, are to continue on Wednesday, after all main points were not review in a conference call on Tuesday.

All works have been halted on the expansion of the canal since 5 February over a dispute about $1.6bn in cost overruns. ACP had said it was critical agreement was reached this week and works restarted.
