SSI members sign shared commitment to sustainability

SSI members sign shared commitment to sustainability
The membership of the Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI), including Lloyd’s Register and Maersk Line, have signed shared commitments to set clear sustainability targets for their businesses by end 2014.

The commitments, to which all parties in the SSI coalition are signed up to, include agreements to form sustainability strategies for their businesses, introducing “clear reduction targets” for harmful practices, disclosing their progress publicly and delivering “a positive impact on people and society”. Any new members of SSI will also now be required to sign the comittments.

The SSI comprises 19 companies including ABN AMRO, AkzoNobel,Bunge, Cargill, Carnival Corporation, China Navigation Company, DNV GL Group, Gearbulk, Lloyd’s Register, Maersk Line, Namura Shipbuilding Co, Rio Tinto Marine, U-Ming Marine Transport Corporation, Unilever and Wärtsilä, as well as recently joined members IMC Group and ABS.

“These commitments signal areas for taking immediate action,” said Stephanie Draper, co-founder and chair of the SSI. “Tackling fundamental issues such as defining what areas of sustainability are material to an organisation, and how these should be addressed to meet business goals, are critical to any major company’s long-term survival.

“Naturally some of our members will be further along in these journeys than others, but by making solid, incremental steps to instigate change and share our results, we hope to inspire other companies within the wider industry to follow suit and realise the commercial benefits for themselves.”
