US dockworkers downsize French fries in Japan
One of the more unlikely victims of the US West Coast port worker industrial action and congestion is French fries served at MacDonald’s in Japan.

The fast food chain has been hit by a shortage of French fries, which it imports from the US, forcing its 3,000 restaurants in Japan to serve only small portions for the foreseeable future.

In an attempt to beat the shortage MacDonald’s air freighted 1,000 tonnes of frozen fries from the US to Japan, and is also sea freighting a further 1,600 tonnes from the US East Coast.

"It is difficult for us to get potatoes in a sustainable manner due to lagging labour negotiations on the US West Coast," it said in a statement.

Fast food loving readers in Singapore will be relieved to know that Channel News Asia reported there was no shortage of French fries at MacDonald’s in the Lion City quoting a spokesman that it had been able to secure supplies from a number of approved sources outside of the US.
