Wärtsilä to supply equipment for US LNG-bunkering facility

Wärtsilä is to provide the LNG supply control system for a new LNG-bunkering facility at Port Fourchon in the US.

Owned by US’ Harvey Gulf International Marine, which has six LNG-fuelled PSVs under construction powered by Wärtsilä 34DF (Dual Fuel) engines and due for delivery end 2014, the new facility will provide LNG fuelling services for offshore and cargo vessels operating in the Gulf of Mexico, and area where there is a “growing need” for LNG-fuelling infrastructure according to Wärtsilä Ship Power Sales Director Joe Amyot.

The scope of the deal includes Wärtsilä control cabinets, PLC-monitoring and control system, computers, and software programming and service commissioning, and is designed to be controlled fully from onboard Harvey Energy PSVs.

As with the shore-based facility, each PSV will be fitted with Wärtsilä LNGPac gas storage and supply system, a fuel-gas handling system featuring removable LNG tank-containers allowing for additional flexibility in bunkering operations. “It was natural that the same basic technology should also be used for the shore fuelling facility,” said Amyot. “Both Harvey Gulf and Wärtsilä are fully committed to promoting environmentally sustainable operations, and by facilitating the use of LNG as a marine fuel, this philosophy is clearly enhanced.”

Harvey Gulf has a further two diesel-electric vessels on order, powered by Wärtsilä 32 engines.
