Seaspan said Yang Ming would be entering into long-term charters with Yang Ming for the 10 newbuildings. The length of the charters was not disclosed.
Five of the 14,000 teu ships are already on order at Hyundai Heavy Industries and will be delivered in 2015.
Seaspan is ordering an additional five 14,000 teu ships at Taiwan’s CSBC yard for $550m in total, with delivery in 2016.
“This order demonstrates our ability to draw upon our financial strength and deep technical and operational expertise to place large scale orders that realise economies of scale for our customers and deliver accretive growth to our shareholders,” said Gerry Wang chairman of Seaspan.
It brings the total number of vessels owned by Seaspan and chartered to Yang Ming to 15. With the latest orders Seaspan is approaching a total fleet of 100 containerships.
