Oman: A terrorist group linked to al Qaeda has claimed responsibility for a mystery blast that hit Mitsui OSK Lines VLCC M Star in the Strait of Hormuz last week. US-based SITE Intelligence said the Brigades of Abdullah Azzam had claimed responsibility for July 28 the attack in a statement issued on what were described as jihadist forums. They claimed the attack, which left a large dent in the hull of the VLCC and damaged the accommodation block injuring a crew member, had been carried out by a suicide bomber from the group. "In a blessed episode of our Jihad in the name of God and in order to weaken the global infidel network, a battalion from our Jihadi brethrens managed to carry out an operation in order to strike an economic blow to the infidels," the statement said. The claim by the group is yet to be verified. The group previously claimed responsibility for the Pearl Continental Hotel bombing in Peshwar, Pakistan last June. [04/08/10]
