The deal covers both tankers for AGSL’s Maran Tankers Management and bulkers for Anangel Maritime Services. The 36 systems will be fitted to VLCCs, suezmaxes, aframaxes, capesizes and mini-capes between 2018 and 2020 at yards in Singapore, Dubai, Qatar and China.
The new BWT systems will ensure that ASGL’s vessels comply with both the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Ballast Water Management Convention and more stringent US Coast Guard (USCG) regulations.
Ecochlor CEO Steve Candito said, “Having both IMO and USCG Type Approval were very important factors in the selection process by ASGL. Our expertise as well as the system’s ease of use and reliability are critical issues to shipowners as they look for manufacturers that are absolutely committed to making sure their vessels are in compliance with BWT regulations now, and for the life of the vessel.”
Echolor said that for Maran Tanker the decision was driven by a need for a BWTS with low power consumption and a minimal environmental footprint, along with providing a safe, easy-to-operate option for their crew.
“We look forward to working with both Maran and Angangel to retrofit their fleet of vessels and continuing to support their efforts in satisfying regulatory compliance. Our BWTS are setting the standard in the ballast water treatment industry for operational performance and reliability,” said Tom Perlich, president of Ecochlor.
The move by ASGL to contract a single company Ecochlor to retrofit a significant portion of its fleet underscores a trend noted by rival manufacturer Alfa Laval for owners to opt for fleet wide deals as the enforcement of the BWM Convention for existing vessels looms closer.
