Manila: The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority has issued a week long cease-and desist order (CDO) against a workshop at Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction (HHIC)'s yard in Subic (pictured) following the death of another yard worker, on Sunday, reports the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
The order is the first step in an inquiry by the SBMA and only affects the Assembly Shop C and not the other operations. However, the authority has said it would "impose further legal and regulatory measures should Hanjin fail to comply with health and safety requirements."
It added that it expected a "full account of the accident from investigators at its (SBMA's) public health and safety office and its law enforcement department to determine whether punitive actions against any erring entity would be warranted."
The worker, Benje Gamolo, is reported to have passed away following an accident involving an eight-ton steel beam. He was the 13th worker to have died in work-related accidents at the shipyard since the project started in 2006.
In March this year, the yard announced plans to form a special committee to monitor compliance of its subcontractors with international safety standards in shipbuilding works. [16/07/08]
