APM Terminals to take over Bahrain ports

APM Terminals to take over Bahrain ports

Bahrain: With completion of the new Khalifa Bin Salman Port - Bahrain Gateway still some two years off, APM Terminals Bahrain is to take over operation of the existing Mina Salman port next week, on December 8.

The company, an 80:20 jv between Maersk A/S and the Kanoo Group, signed a concession agreement with the Bahrain Government covering operations of both ports earlier in the month. The concession will run for 25 years from commencement of operations at KBSP - Bahrain Gateway.

The new port is to have 1.8 km of berths, land area of 900,000 square metres and draft of 15 metres, allowing it to handle vessels up to post-panamax size. Efficiency will match that of the most productive ports in the world, promises APMTB, making it "an ideal location for carriers to tranship containers for all destinations in the Upper Gulf."

At Mina Salman, meanwhile, a berthing window system is to be introduced by the new operator, in order to ensure "schedule integrity". In addition, APM Terminals' sister company SvitzerWijsmuller will manage pilotage services for Bahrain territorial waters, excluding the Dry Dock at ASRY.  [01/12/06]
