Moscow: Russian Railways has embarked on a trial container shipment from Vladivostok to Moscow on new beefed up infrastructure that could slash train times in half and provide shippers with more options to move cargoes from the Far East to Europe. A train left Vladivostok yesterday loaded with containers and authorities are confident the transit time will be seven days, a vast improvement on the current two week time to complete the route that passes through six time zones.
Russian Railways is also trying to fast track developments in North Korea so that cargoes from the Korean peninsula could link to the TransSiberian too. Chinese cargoes can link in via Mongolia. [23/02/09]
