Asian lines dominate container rankings

Taiwan: Asian container lines dominate a new list of top container lines released by Dynaliners this week. The figures, based on capacity of operated fleet, indicate that 17 out of top 25 lines were Asia based companies. (Additionally, an 18th group, CSAV, controls Hong Kong based subsidiary Norasia.)

These 17 lines collectively operate capacity of 4.1m teu, accounting for almost 40% (39.2%) of the world total , which Dynaliners puts at 10.4m teu, based on data from AXS-Alphaliner.

The top Asian companies to make the list are: Evergreen (4th place), pictured, with capacity of 548,000 teu, China Shipping (6) with 400,000 teu, Coscon (7) with 387,000 teu, Hanjin (8) wih 348,000 teu and APL (9) with 339,000 teu. Other companies to make the list include NYK (10), MOL (11), OOCL(12), "K" Line (13).

Dynaliners noted that it expected a "not too bad" year ahead for liner shipping since overcapacity fears seem to have eased.  [05/01/07]
