Asry announces $188m expansion

Manama: The Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company (Asry; pictured) has announced plans to embark on a $188m facility expansion over the next two and a half years. The expansion would consist of a basic quay wall and an offshore launching pier as well as an additional 1,200mtr of berthing space to repair medium and large vessels.

The Gulf Daily News has quoted Asry chairman Shaikh Daij bin Salman bin Daij Al Khalifa, as stating that he expected the plans to be formally approved during a general assembly meeting today.

He was speaking during a ceremony to inaugurate an additional berth two $20m slipways at the yard in Hidd, among the largest in the world at 510m each. The new facilities have already handled 11 ships since they were completed in July.  [16/10/08]
