Chittagong: The government has taken legal steps against three shipbreaking yards for not having clearance from the environment directorate. This is part of an ongoing crackdown by authorities on substandard ship recyclers.
??The organisations targeted this time are--Rahman Shipyard and Messrs Mahin Enetrprise at Maddhyam Shonaichhari and Ambia Ship Breakers at Madambibir Haat of Sitakunda coastal area. ??
Director Saiful Asrab of the directorate filed three separate cases against them with Sitakunda Police Station after submitting complaints to the Divisional Environment Court. ??
Acting director of the directorate Mostafizur Rahman said that the cases were filed as those organisations were operating without approval. ??Even though they were asked to get the clearance, these organisations did not do so, he said. ??
Earlier on April 21 the authorities filed four more similar cases. [05/05/10]
