Chittagong: Bangladesh's oldest shipyard Highspeed is to build eight 4,500 dwt multi-purpose vessels to Germanischer Lloyd class for Dutch shipping company Hollander Schultens. The Fatullah-based yard will begin construction of the ice class vessels in December 2008 and aims to have delivered all the vessels by April 2012.
During this period, the 1961-built yard plans to upgrade its facilities, expand its dry dock and buy modern equipment including new covered sheds and machinery. Highspeed currently specialises in small river cargo and passenger vessels up to 3,000 tonnes.
"The order with Highspeed Shipbuilding is another great step forward for the shipbuilding industry in Bangladesh", says CF Zaman, Germanischer Lloyd country manager Bangladesh. The classification society has been represented in Bangladesh since the mid-1980s and is also to class an export order for twelve 5,500dwt multipurpose vessels built at Ananda shipyard and an order for five multi-purpose dry cargo vessels at Western Marine shipyard.
