Bangladesh stops shipbreaking after explosion

Dhaka:After another explosion on a ship at a ship breaking yard in Sitakunda that killed four workers on Tuesday, Bangladesh High Court yesterday issued a rule to stop all kinds of ship scrapping activities in the country until further notice. The court also ordered the authorities concerned to move the unclean hazardous ship away from the beach until further notice.
"According to our initial findings, the owners of the ship did not proceed as per guidelines set by the Department of Explosives during the pre-scrapping inspection," Zafar Alam, DoE Chittagong Director told the media. [21/01/11]
