Brisbane port in danger of losing power

Brisbane: Australia's Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) has warned that Brisbane port could lose power due to severe flooding of electrical sub-stations at Hemmant. The port had been shut down from midnight on Wednesday and all ships have been removed from the port in anticipation of the flood and strong currents, the Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) advised yesterday. Port staff are being reduced to essential service levels and the authority has advised stakeholders to consider their own risk profiles, staff requirements and operations with possible power loss in mind. Severe currents were reported in the river and huge amounts of debris, boats, pontoons and foreign objects were floating downstream, according to EMQ. Road access to the port remains open and is expected to remain passable during the flood. [12/01/11]
