Bulk carrier scrapping hits record in Q1
London: The first three months of this year saw a record quarterly number of bulk carriers sent to be demolished, according to data by Clarkson Research Services.

A record 139 bulk carriers were scrapped in the first quarter, representing 7.8m dwt of capacity. Out of the total capacity, 2.4m dwt fell under panamaxes between 60,000-99,999 dwt, of which 35% were reported by Clarkson.

28 ships between 40,000-59,999 dwt representing 1.3 dwt were sold for recycling while 64 handysizes between 10,000-39,999 dwt totalling 1.9m dwt were broken down.

The average year of build for bulk carriers sent to the shipbreaking yards in the first quarter was 1982, higher than the range of 1979 to 1981 reported throughout 2011.

For containerships, a total of 61,200 teu of capacity were removed from the market while 10,000 dwt and above tankers saw 39 vessels totalling 3.9m dwt sent for demolition in the first quarter, Clarkson noted.
