Last year’s total throughput represented a 5.6% increase on 2013 and is split between 9.25m teu of local cargo and 9.42m teu of transhipment cargo, according to Busan Port Authority (BPA).
For the first time, transhipment cargo volumes overtook local cargo, marking the gradual rise of Busan as an important transhipment facility in Northeast Asia.
Lim Ki-tack, president of BPA, told Seatrade Global earlier that the port was aiming to move 18.2m teu this year.
At Busan New Port, 22 berths are now in operation and freight is also being handled at the Northern Logistics Park and the Western Logistics Park.
BPA is pushing ahead with plans to construct an additional eight berths and add a further 1.91m square meter logistics facility (Distripark) on the western and southern perimeters.
