China contracts Wärtsilä for rescue boat engines

China contracts Wärtsilä for rescue boat engines
Wärtsilä has secured contracts to provide four propulsion systems for ocean rescue vessels for the Chinese government.

The propulsion systems, to be supplied for construction at China’s Guangzhou Huang-Pu Shipbuilding Company, will consist of nine-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 main engines, Wärtsilä controllable pitch propellers (CPP), gearboxes, shaft generators and Wärtsilä's Lipstronic 7000 propulsion control system.

When completed and delivered at the end of 2014, the new vessels will see operation by the Chinese Government’s Ministry of Transportation, Rescue and Salvage Bureau. Aaron Bresnahan, vice president of sales at Wärtsilä Ship Power, said that the propulsion system would be “engineered to meet the most demanding requirements” in the “harsh environment” in which the vessels will be operating.
