China's steel exports slide 31% in first half

Hong Kong: China's steel exports in the first half of this year were down by more than 30% on the same 2007 period, according to data reported to Steel Business Briefing by the London-based Iron & Steel Statistics Bureau. The fall in June to just 4.8m tonnes took the January-June export total to 24.9m t compared with 36.2m t in last year's first half.
In 2008's first six months, China's exports to Europe - where it is facing a number of anti-dumping actions - were down by more than 50% year-on-year. Shipments to Asia fell by 21%, but China's largest market, South Korea, took 5% more at 7.2m t. [29/7/08]
