Chinese language version of bulk cargo handling guide

Chinese language version of bulk cargo handling guide
A Chinese language version of a pocket checklist for handling solid bulk cargoes safely is to be available at Marintec China 2013 next week.

The pocket guide and checklist “Carrying solid bulk cargoes safely: Guidance for crews on the IMSBC Code” produced by Lloyd’s Register, UK P&I Club and Intercargo has now been made available in Chinese.

The improper carriage and handling of bulk cargoes can lead to liquefaction, fires and explosion resulting in the loss of vessels. The liquefaction of nickel ore cargoes on the trade between Indonesia and China has been a particular issue with over 80 seafarers losing their lives as a result casualties since 2010.

"This guide heightens awareness of seafarers, managers, charterers and shippers to the hazards associated with carrying solid bulk cargoes. Everyone involved has a responsibility to ensure cargo is accurately declared and the hazards mitigated,” said Sam James, LR’s global head of fire and safety.

“Now with our Chinese language version available we hope to reach an even wider audience of shipping and trading professionals. Clearly China as the biggest player in the bulk trades is a vital user group."

LR said the checklist of the Chinese language edition would be available at Marintec China 2013 in Shanghai next week.
