Chinese port companies ink Indonesian, Djibouti and German agreements

During the second Belt and Road Forum held at Beijing last week Chinese companies continued to grow their influence port agreements inked across multiple continents.

In Asia Zhejiang Seaport and Ningbo Zhoushan Port inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indonesian port companies.

The MoU with PT Pelabuhan Indonesia I in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam and PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II running Tanjung Priok Sea Port, covers jointly developing Kuala Tanjung international transportation hub and industrial park locally.

The parties will extend their cooperation under the MoU to develop more businesses on terminal construction, port management, port logistics, capital and technology cooperation.

Meanwhile in the Horn of Africa China Merchants Port Holdings and China Merchants Shekou inked co-operation framework agreement with Great Horn Investment Holdings to upgrade the old port in Djibouti.

China Merchants has been operating port projects at Djibouti for several years, and the old port upgrading project will enter into the practical phase following the signing of the agreement, said Li Jianhong, chairman of China Merchants Group.

Moving north to Europ,e Chongqing Liangjiang New Area inked a strategic co-operation MOU with Duisburg port of Germany.

According to the agreement, the two parties will jointly develop multi-model transportation. Duisburg port will share professional knowledge and experiences on port management, and overseas cargo resources to Liangjiang New area, while Liangjiang will provide support locally.

The cooperation will promote inland river port development and strengthen the connection between Europe and Asia, said Yang Lijie, director of Liang Jiang New Area Management Committee.

Proposed by China’s President Xi Jinping in 2013, Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has extended from Asia and Europe to Africa, Americas and Oceania. More than 150 countries and international organizations have signed BRI cooperation documents with China.
