Chinese ports announce throughput increase

Shanghai: The Chinese Minister of Communications Li Shenglin has revealed a 20.4% increase in container throughput at the country's mainland ports during 2007. The ports handled 112.7m teu, while overall tonnage rose by 15.1% to 6.41bn tonnes during the period. The Minister stated that there are currently 1,400 ports with over 35,000 berths in operation in China. Seaports have about 5,000 berths, which can handle 61.5m teu annually, which is responsible for 90% of China's foreign trade.  [16/01/08]
