Chongqing Dongfeng popular among Greeks

Chongqing: The coast might be some 3,000 km away but that has not stopped Central China's Chongqing Dongfeng Shipbuilding Corp grabbing a host of orders to fuel dramatic expansion plans. A $40m expansion plan has been inked that will see existing docks enlarged a brand new dock, 530 m in length, capable of building eight 10,000 dwt ships simultaneously. The Greeks have been the largest orderers at this subsidiary of Changjiang National Shipping Group. Medtankers placed an order for 15 ships ranging size from 5,500 dwt to 9,000 dwt, to add to the four ships it ordered here last year while Ena has four  5,500 dwt chemical tankers and two 5,500 dwt product tankers on order. Yangte river draft restrictions mean that the yard cannot build beyond 10,000 dwt designs. [24/09/07]
