Mumbai: The world's largest ship classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has opened a plan approval centre in Mumbai to assist Indian entities with new constructions. Noboru Ueda (pictured), ClassNK chairman and president spoke of his hopes for the new centre at a gathering of the Indian maritime community on Friday, May 2.
The new office is part of a three pronged plan by the Japan-headquartered society to increase its world wide presence. It also plans to open plan approval centres in Istanbul and Busan this year to complement its current offerings.
ClassNK currently has about 6,800 ships exceeding 153m gt in its register, making it the only classification society to have surpassed the 150m gt mark. [06/05/08]
