ClassNK smashes records with global growth
Tokyo: Record newbuilding growth during the year coupled with increased numbers of vessels transferred from other class societies has pushed ClassNK's registration figures to record levels for 2012

In its official registration figures for 2012, ClassNK said it had taken a total of 964 newly registered vessels, totalling 25.7m gt. The figures set new records for number of vessels and total gross tonnage registered in a single year, the 10th straight year the tonnage record has been broken.

Newbuildings accounted for 692 vessels totalling 20.3m gt in 2012, with transfers contributing 272 vessels totalling 5.4m gt, doubling the number of vessels transferred in 2011.

Addressing the record number of transfers, Noburu Ueda, chairman of ClassNK noted: “Our growth in Europe in particular has increased our registration of existing vessels, with transfers of German owners alone accounting for roughly 20% of all existing tonnage registered in 2012.”

ClassNK has maintained its position as the largest class society since 1999 with a current fleet of 210m gt but the crown is set to be stolen by 260m gt giant DNV GL Group once the merger of DNV and GL is complete.
