At the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA)-controlled Jaya Container Terminal (JCT), transshipments spiked 44% to 164,252 teu in January compared to 114,282 teu in the previous corresponding period.
Overall container throughput also increased, rising 16% to 564,155 teu compared to 484,866 teu in January 2017.
Meanwhile the number of container ship calls also increased 9% to 332 vessels from 304 in the previous corresponding period.
The port authority said the good relationship between management and SLPA trade unions and collaborative support by all parties and stake holders engaged in port operations process has contributed to the increase in productivity at SLPA.
SLPA has a three-year development plan to further increase container volumes and aims to make Colombo the maritime centre of Asia, SLPA said in a press release.
