Cosco launches revamped India service

Shanghai: Today sees the launch of a new China-India container service by Cosco Container Lines and its consortium partners with the sailing of the 1,218 teu Evergreen vessel Uni Patriot from Shanghai.

Known as the China Straits India service, it will call Ningbo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Colombo and Nhava Sheva. On the way back it will call Singapore, Pasir Gudang, Laem Chabang, and Hong Kong, before returning to Shanghai. Consortium partners with Coscon and Evergreen, are Samudera Shipping and Yang Ming.

A previous version of the service used smaller ships and a different port rotation. The Shanghai-based subsidiary of Singapore-listed China Cosco, now deploys a 127 -vessel fleet totalling mo0re than 320,000 teu on more than 60 routes. The fleet is due to expand rapidly to 450,000 teu in the next two years and then almost doubling again to 800,000 teu in 2010. (21/08/06)
