Dubai: The first China Shipping Container Line (CSCL) vessel has docked at DP World's new $1.5bn Jebel Ali container terminal this week. The 5,668 teu Dalian called at the terminal as part of CSCL's Asia-Middle East-America service and will continue to do so four to five times per month.
'DP World is honoured to welcome the China Shipping Container Line to the new terminal at Jebel Ali," said Mohammed Al Muallem, DP World UAE md. "This is a milestone occasion for us as one of largest container shipping companies in the world makes the new terminal a part of its route network." He added that the new terminal and future expansions would allow Dubai to continue its role as a strategic location for shipping and logistics without facing any capacity issues.
The three berths at new terminal (the second terminal at the port) increase the Jebel Ali's (pictured) total handling capacity by two million teu, to 11m teu.The second phase of the terminal will be completed by the third quarter of 2008. The new terminal features 18-rail mounted gantries and eight tandem lift gantry cranes, capable of simultaneously lifting either two 40-foot containers or four 20-foot containers.
The Dalian is the second vessel to call at the terminal, following on from the APL Dubai, which berthed at Terminal 2 in August. [30/11/07]
