CSCL takes delivery of first China-made 8,530teu containership

Shanghai: China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) has taken delivery of an 8,530teu container vessel - the first vessel with wholly independent Chinese intellectual property rights. The ship, which was built by Shanghai-based Hudong-zhonghua Shipbuilding Group (HZSC)- a subsidiary of the China Shipbuilding Group Corporation (CSSC), brings China into the fold of countries capable of building giant container ships. The others are Denmark, Japan and South Korea.

The vessel, christened 'Xin Asia', was delivered on Sunday and immediately began its maiden voyage to the US as part of CSCL's ACC Far East/West Coast service. The Xin Asia is the first of a series of five container ships built by the yard for CSCL and features a 335mtr loa and will be capable of a speed 25 knots per hour.

HZSC, which spent six years constructing the vessel, has confirmed that it will build nine vessels of this type, with the additional four vessels commissioned by the Greek Costamare Shipping Company.  [10/09/07]
