CSNOx scrubber to be tested on Great Lakes

Singapore: Emissions scrubbing technology company Ecospec of Singapore has announced its "biggest business venture yet" to combat climate change. Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) has agreed to install the company's CSNOx system - claimed to be highly efficient in cleaning engine exhaust emissions of much of their CO2, SOx and NOx content - onboard one of its vessels plying North America's Great Lakes later this year.

"CSL and Ecospec are optimistic that this system could be the environmental emission reduction breakthrough that the marine industry has been searching for, and will become the new standard for emission reductions," the companies said in a joint statement.

A full testing of the effectiveness of CSNOx by ABS is also reported underway with Ecospec confident of receiving certification by the US-based classification society this summer. The results claimed by Ecospec, if verified, could signal a major step forward on the marine emissions front but sceptics remain to be convinced.  [09/06/10]
