London: Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group, China's top shipbuilder, has moved further up the global shipbuilding table after the June orderbook is taken into account, according to Clarkson Research Services. Although Korean yards dominate the top ten, Dalian, formed last year from a merger of Dalian Shipyard with Dalian New Shipyard, has climbed two places to fifth spot in terms of compensated gross tonnes (cgt) on order with 2.8m; in deadweight terms it is fourth. Mighty Hyundai Heavy Industries tops the table with 11.74m cgt, and Korean yards Samsung (8.27m cgt), Daewoo (7.4m cgt), Hyundai Mipo (4.1m cgt) Hyundai Samho (2.68m cgt), STX (2.67m cgt) and Hanjin (2.27m cgt) place second, third, fourth, six, seventh and eighth respectively. Only one Japanese yard, Mitsubishi HI (1.85m cgt), appears in the ranking at nine, while Dalian's compatriot Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (1.84m cgt) also makes the list at number 10.
