Dalian shipbuilders see decline in newbuilding exports
China’s Dalian shipbuilders have seen a decline in the export of newbuildings in the first 10 months of this year amid lower production activities at the yards, according Dalian Customs.

From January to October 2014, Dalian shipbuilders in Liaoning province recorded newbuilding exports valued at RMB7.26bn ($1.17bn), a sharp plunge of 55% compared to the same period last year, figures from the local customs showed.

The two main export markets for Dalian continue to be Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.

Newbuilding exports to the nearby Hong Kong market were valued at RMB3.15bn, down 54.6% compared to the previous corresponding period. Sales of new ships to Southeast Asia racked in RMB1.51bn, a drop of 64.6% year-on-year.

An official from Dalian Customs observed that the fall in export figures was due mainly to reduced shipyard production activities amid the slowdown in China’s shipbuilding industry.

According to data from China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (Cansi), Chinese shipyards completed a total of 28.47m dwt of newbuilding tonnage in the first 10 months, down 18.2% over the year-ago period.

“While the Chinese shipbuilding industry saw a growth in new vessel orders and orderbook backlog this year, the fall in completed tonnage and margins have directly impacted the newbuilding export market,” the Dalian Customs official was quoted as saying.

This year up until 30 October, Chinese shipyards received new orders with tonnage totalling 53.73m dwt, up 15.7% compared to the same period of 2013. The orderbook backlog during the 10-month period stood at 153.55m dwt, an increase of 30.3% over the previous corresponding period, data from Cansi showed.
