In the latest development in the land component of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Damco is launching a weekly east – west rail service promising a transit time some 20 days faster than ocean freight, reduced lead times, increased reliability, and greater visibility across the supply chain.
Kasper Krog, global head of rail at Damco commented, “We know the pressures our customers are under to reduce the time it takes to move their goods from source to shop. We’ve seen an incredible rise in demand for rail, which is a reliable and speedy alternative to ocean freight.”
China’s BRI is opening up a number of rail routes between the west of the country and Europe, which compete both with large scale ocean shipping on the Asia – Europe trade, where Maersk Line has a leading position, and air freight. Damco is offering both FCL and LCL services on the route.

“Thanks to our GPS tracking, we offer our customers detailed insights into the whereabouts of their containers at all times, giving them peace of mind about the timely delivery of their goods, as well as their safety and security as they make their intercontinental journey. With greater predictability offered by our experts, our customers can make more informed decisions about how they move their goods,” said Krog.
