Tokyo: Japan's Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES) is rapidly becoming known as a leader in green shipbuilding, developing designs for VLCCs and VLOCs that will emit 30% less emissions than the current crop of giant ships. Now, the company has announced it will join Osaka University in researching a hybrid propulsion system, which combines a battery unit into the diesel engine
MES anticipates that in the future there may be demands to reduce ships' emissions by up to 50-80% for which battery assistance will be necessary, their researchers suggest. [13/08/09]
