Dedicated auto terminal opens in Dalian

Dalian: A dedicated terminal for automobiles was inaugurated in Dayao Bay in the port of Dalian last week, operated by a 40:30:30 joint venture between Dalian Port Group, NYK and Cosco Ports (Dalian RoRo).

NYK chairman Takao Kusakari attended the event and told an audience including Dalian mayor Xia Deren: 'We would like to contribute to the development of China's automobile industry by promoting the terminal as a logistics centre for automobiles in northeast China.'

Dalian Automotive Terminal is the third auto facility in China where NYK has an involvement, after Shanghai and Tianjin. The initial two are used mainly by NYKCOS, the Japanese carrier's joint venture with Cosco, which was set up in 2002. The jv was established  for the delivery of finished Chinese-built cars, initially along the domestic coast and eventually to export destinations, the partners announced at the time.

China produced 5.7m automobile units last year, making it the third largest car producer in the world behind the US and Japan.

The new terminal measures just over 200,000 square metres in area with a quay length in excess of 500 metres, giving it an annual handling capacity of around 300,000 cars.   [13/07/06]
