"I'm pleased and proud that DNV has been selected as the preferred class for these huge and advanced ships," said Henrik Madsen, DNV Group ceo. "We have actively supported the owner and yard up to the contract signing. Through our expertise and technology, we have been able to aid in the development of these new ships, which represent a major leap forward in terms of size and operational excellence."
The ships are to be built a Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea and will be designed to be easily retrofitted to run on LNG fuel, an idea DNV is calling "LNG ready".
The vessels will be built for the Asia-Middle East-Europe trades with an optimal speed between 16 and 18 knots.
"I'm sure DNV is the right partner when UASC is to take this major leap for the container shipping industry," commented Jørn Hinge, UASC ceo. "These are complex ships. Complexity requires competence and DNV has been preferred due to its long-lasting focus on and development of expertise."
UASC's newbuilds are expected to be delivered from late 2014 for the 18,000 teu units and the first half of 2015 for the 14,000 teu ships.
