ClassNK issued a press release stating its 20.5m gt in new additions across newbuildings and existing vessels, while DNV GL revealed its 26.4m gt in additions, responding to questions from Seatrade Global.
The latest figures bring DNV GL's fleet to 267.9m gt at the end of 2013, with ClassNK at 220.9m gt. The merger of DNV and GL as DNV GL in 2013 saw it surpass ClassNK as the world's largest classification society by tonnage registered. However, ClassNK has continued to make well publicised gains in Europe, in particular Germany.
ClassNK was the first classification society to pass the 200m gt mark in 2012, followed by ABS in July last year, and latterly DNV GL in its merger in September which made it the largest classification society in the world.
