Dubai: DP World has announced that it aims to virtually double the container volumes at Jebel Ali port to 14m teu per year in the next four years. The terminal has just finished phase one of its $1.5bn expansion project which has given Jebel Ali a 11.5m teu capacity through the addition of three new berths. The second phase, already underway will see the terminal capapcity expand further to meet its 14m teu target.
DP World UAE managing director Mohammad Al Muallem told Gulfnews that the company expects to fully use the increased capacity at Jebel Ali, the biggest regional shipping hub. "It will take us at least four years to reach 14m teu in throughput if everything remains as buoyant as it is now," he said.
When the expansion at the container terminal is completed in mid-2008, it will boast a quay of 7.2 kms and an entry channel up to 17mtr. [27/07/07]
