Seoul: Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has won an order worth 578.9bn won ($633m) for the construction of a semi-submersible drilling rig, reports Dow Jones. The rig, to be completed by August 2010, will be delivered to an unnamed Latin American company.
The yard, which has received orders worth $12.5bn this year alone, recently launched two Russian Maritime Register Ice Class LU2 LNGC vessels (pictured). This is the first time that DSME has constructed LNGC vessels of the LU2 Ice-Class.
In a statement, the yard said, "It is well-known that the construction of an Ice-Class LNGC requires more complicated skills, because the steel and equipment installed on the vessel must withstand cold conditions. In particular, the machinery and equipment installed on the exposed weather deck should be able to operate in an air temperature of minus 25 °C. Furthermore, the vessel's grading of LR 1B means that it can sail on water covered with 0.6mtrs of ice." [26/07/07]
