DSME secures $633m suezmax order from Almi Tankers

Seoul: Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has been contracted by Greek shipowner Almi Tankers to construct 10 suezmax tankers of 160,000dwt each for delivery beginning 2011. According to the terms of the agreement, worth an estimated $633m, Almi Tankers is to have taken delivery of all 10 ships by 2013. This latest contract would indicate tha DSME has secured orders for 28 ships (including the suezmaxes) worth $3.7 bn during the course of 2009.

In an interview with Hellenic Shipping News, a company source said that Almi Tankers chose the Suezmax sector as it "believes that it offers significant growth potential in the coming years". The source carried on to say that the vessels will be among the greenest worldwide, in excess of environmental regulation being implemented as far as 2013, and will boast the latest technologies, engines and specifications. The vessels are expected to have the capability to run on low sulphur fuels.

The new vessels will substantially expand the tanker owner's current fleet of two product tankers at present deployed in the Teekay Tankers managed Taurus Tankers LR2 pool.  [23/12/09]
