Seoul: Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), the world's third largest shipbuilder, has clinched a series of new contracts in recent days which look set to make June a record for the South Korean shipyard group.
Last Thursday, a deal to build a fourth $640m deepwater drillship for Houston-based Transocean, the world's largest offshore drilling company, was announced. Then on Friday, the firm confirmed a $424m contract to build three VLCCs for an unidentified European tanker owner. And on Saturday, the builder said it expects to win more contracts within the next few days for six container vessels worth $410m from two European companies.
So far, the group has booked more than $3bn of contracts relating to more than 20 vessels in June, taking the total value of orders booked this year to $9.2bn, or 84% of its $11bn target. [25/06/07]
