Fire latest mishap at Hudong-Zhonghua

Shanghai: Reports are filtering into Seatrade's China news bureau of a fire onboard a ship under construction at Hudong Zhonghua's shipyard in Changxing island. The fire, which blew out of control Sunday morning, killed one and seriously injured two more workers. Welding is deemed as the likeliest cause for the fire. The fire started at the bottom of the accommodation block of an 8,350 teu boxship. Hudong-Zhonghua has been hit by a string of misfortunes. A collapsed crane last year saw the yard partially relocate to Changxing while the fraught delivery of its landmark first LNG ship has been soured by the news the ship, Dapeng Sun, had to enter for urgent repairs in Singapore this month, just over a year after it was delivered six months late.  [30/06/09]
