Los Angeles: The 6,200teu post-Panamax vessel the NYK Atlas (pictured) became the first containership in Japanese shipping line Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha's fleet to use a "direct" shoreside electric power connection during its call at the Port of Los Angeles this week.
The 6.6 KV Alternative Maritime Powered (AMP) vessel was connected to shoreside power a few hours after docking at Yusen Terminals on Saturday, November 10 and continued utilizing the power source until its departure three days later. Prior to the utilization of AMP technology, vessels at berth were Powered by auxiliary engines burning diesel fuel.
"NYK Line takes great pride in being a global steward of our environment. The NYK Atlas is the first of a new generation of container vessels that emphasize social and environmental responsibility to the communities where our vessels call," said Peter Keller, president of NYK Line (North America).
The group, which operates a fleet of 740 major ocean vessels, plans to equip 38 vessels with the ability to utilise shoreside electric power. The NYK Atlas calls the Port of Los Angeles approximately eight times per year. [15/11/07]
