Former ST Marine president sentenced to 10 months jail

Former ST Marine president sentenced to 10 months jail
A Singapore court has sentenced a former ST Marine ceo and president to 10 months jail and a SGD100,000 ($70,500) fine over a graft scandal involving several senior executives of the company.

See Leong Teck, former ST Marine president and ceo, had earlier pleaded guilty to one charge of corruption, falsification of accounts, and failure to act honestly and use reasonable diligence in the discharge of his duties.

See was the fifth of seven former ST Marine executives charged in the graft scandal to be convicted, and four of the five have since been sentenced.

The statement of facts in See’s case implicates two more ST Marine board members – Peter Yap Kim Kee and Tan Pheng Hock. Both Yap and Tan allegedly knew of kickbacks that ST Marine officers paid to its clients’ employees. Both men have not been charged.

See was appointed ST Marine’s ceo in December 1997 and was its president from 1998 until 2008. He will start his sentence on 31 January 2017.

The previous sentencing of the graft scandal in September this year saw former senior vice president Mok Kim Whang given a 20-week imprisonment and a fine of SGD100,000.

In August this year, former coo and senior vice president of shipbuilding Han Yew Kwang was jailed for six months and fined SGD80,000. And in July 2015, former group financial controller Patrick Lee was fined SGD210,000.

Two others out of the seven charged – former president Chang Cheow Teck and former senior vice president (finance) Ong Tek Liam – have not been convicted.
