Over the period the line has made its mark in the intra-Asia trade, becoming one of the top performers, md Danny Hoffmann said. “I am humbled to stand here to celebrate our 60th anniversary which is a great landmark in our history and a point where I stand and look to the future,” Hoffmann said.
He noted recent developments in the liner industry and the Intra-Asia trade in particular have brought new challenges. “The shipping industry is becoming even more challenging than before with the rise of new economies and trade rules,” Hoffmann said.
However he pointed out amid these conditions, Asia has the most potential for mid-sized companies such as Gold Star Line, with the 80m teu in volume within the trade comprising the industry’s biggest trade lane by volume.
While looking forward to the challenge in what he described as Gold Star Line’s home ground, Hoffmann said: “The dynamics of how we do business have changed from the last decade.”
Pointing out that despite the current trend in the wider industry where scale has taken precedence, Hoffmann reiterated: “However the ship size will not be the paramount factor of doing business in Intra-Asia.”
He emphasized that it will depend more on efficiency of the operator and the agility of its decision making process. “Technologies are becoming a key factor in the shipping industry and GSL follows this trend,” Hoffmann also said, noting that the line will continue to face challenges in infrastructure and would need to find new methods of doing business in Asia.
